Cleaning Tips for Allergy-Proofing Your Home

Allergy-Proofing Your HomeWhether spring is just around the corner or your allergies are already starting to act up, you may be considering ways to alleviate your symptoms that don’t come in the form of a pill bottle. Luckily, there are many steps that you can take right now to modify your home and lifestyle to reduce allergy and asthma flare-ups. Not sure where to start? An allergist can certainly help you come up with a treatment plan. If you’re looking to say goodbye to sneezing, runny noses and watery eyes, here are some steps you can take to allergy-proof your home.
Start With the Bedroom
The bedroom is probably the room you want to focus on the most when it comes to reducing your allergy symptoms. After all, it’s the place you spend 7-8 hours (or more) a night sleeping. If you’re sensitive to dust mites, then you will want to find pillow and mattress casings that will keep out dust mites. Even with these casings on your bed, you still need to wash your bedding at least once a week in water that is hot enough to kill mites (at least 130 degrees F).
Allergic to pollen? Then it’s a good idea to hop in the shower and to throw your clothes directly into the laundry basket before getting into bed. By showering off and removing any pollen you can reduce your risk for tracking pollen into the bedroom. Have a pet? You may want to consider keeping your bedroom a pet-free zone.
Keep Your Living Space Allergy-Free
After you’ve allergy-proofed your bedroom it’s time to move to the living room. If you have carpeting this can easily trap allergens when you and your family come inside. This is why it’s best to have a professional come in a clean your carpeting, as well as to vacuum regularly. If you have hardwood floors this is much easier to keep clean. Make sure you dust and clean all surfaces weekly and avoid putting down rugs or carpeting if possible. When vacuuming, make sure to wear an N95 mask that can help prevent particles from being breathed in while you clean. Also, invest in a quality air purifier with a HEPA filter.
Now, Let’s Tackle the Kitchen and Bathroom
When it comes to these two spaces, you want to keep these areas extremely clean because they are most susceptible to mold. Check to make sure no leaks are coming from the drain, and that you're cleaning surfaces every day to get rid of bacteria. It’s as simple as putting a bit of bleach into some warm water and using that to clean all surfaces. When it comes to the bathroom, ventilation is also key. Make sure you have a ventilation fan in the bathroom that can reduce humidity in the room, especially when showering.
If allergy season has you feeling trapped indoors then it’s time that you talked with an allergist to find a more effective and long-term solution.
